While in University I created a fully working Board Game. 'Exemplar' is a 2-4 player board game about managing resources, building cities and controlling armies to defeat your opponents. I wanted to take the gameplay of RTS video games and re-create this in board game format.
Players can choose from 4 unique Heroes, giving them access to special abilities and army units specifically for their race. They can also customise the statistics of their hero and upgrade their armies, allowing them to create powerful combinations.

'Fog Of War' is an important mechanic involved in this game, as it is in most RTS's. To show this, each player has a 'Map Deck' -when reaching the end of one tile, they can then place a new map tile next to it and continue on. This essentially procedurally generates the board every time they play, giving different outcomes every time. Map tiles include 1 time resource pick ups, as well as resource generation tiles, to allow players to build forward bases and earn a steady stream of materials each turn.
A side objective for players, other than defeating each other, was the Super Weapon. This can only be built in the center of the map, meaning a player needs to be in a good position economy-wise and personnel-wise, to hold off other players. Should a player acquire the central Super Weapon, they will have destructive power across the board. So players should try to take them out quickly!
During this games creation I recording development diaries, explaining the mechanics more in depth and what changes occurred during its development. A playlist can be found here - https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLusLMon5RyD9fjIKhKyDIdNpsKxCcmT4d
